IF YOU’RE looking for a wholesome day out for the family to kick-start the new year, you’ll struggle to find a better occasion than the 162nd Maryborough Highland Gathering on Wednesday 1 January.

A highlight on the Maryborough community’s calendar, the Gathering was first held by local Scottish squatters and businessmen in an attempt to re-create the new year celebrations of their native home.

Today it attracts people from around Australia and offers something for everyone – a pipe band street parade, all-day athletics, Highland dancing, Highland games and traditional strongmen/women’s events.

Maryborough Highland Society sports secretary Nick Weaver said the event is huge for the town and surrounding community.

“The Highland Gathering has been a staple of the town for so long,” he said.

“It draws athletes from all over Australia, including both track athletes and those competing in the strongman and strongwoman events, so there’ll be plenty to keep everyone entertained.

“We also have a street parade at 10am featuring Scottish pipe bands from places like Castlemaine, Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and St Arnaud.

“There’ll be old-fashioned cars, hot rods, and even some vintage farm machinery as well.

“It’s a great spot around Princess Park with big trees and a fantastic view of the action.

“If you’re looking for something to do please come on down – bring a chair, grab a seat, and relax. You’ll definitely enjoy it, it’s going to be an exciting day for the whole family.”

Further information is available on the event’s Facebook page.
