THE winning artists from Bendigo Senior Secondary College’s annual Year 12 Acquisitive Art Exhibition have been announced with awards given out for works in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, art fashion, visual communication and media.

The major prize recipient was Patrick Boylson, who received the La Trobe Uni Visual Arts Award.

Hamish Johnson received the Spotlight Art Fashion Award, while Tahia Sherwood won the Margaret Standen Photography Award.

Exhibition judge and Bendigo Art Gallery curator Emma Busowsky said her adjudication process varied for every medium, but generally speaking she looked for “something that’s been well executed, technically and formally, but also brings together the concept or the idea behind it.”

“I wanted to really understand, not just through my own subjectivity, but (also) if a student had a good concept for the work, and that it had also been executed in a very strong way technically,” she said.

“It took a lot of time because I wanted to put comments on things as well and really give them something to think about.”

She said the major award went to Patrick Boylson because she simply “kept coming back to it”.

“It was a really well-executed picture and it seemed very universal to me,” she said.

“It was obviously about referring to the universe and our small place within it. Technically, he’d done a great job and the composition of the work really added to its meaning.”
