A NEW marketing campaign has been launched with over seventy Mexican-inspired events and experiences on offer, ahead of tomorrow’s official opening of the Frida Kahlo: In her own image exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery.

The Bendigo Fiesta campaign will include The Taco Trail, which runs from March to July, where local residents and visitors will be able to sample 20 eateries’ take on the classic Mexican snack and choose their favourite.

Voters will enter a draw to win a VIP weekend for two in Bendigo valued at over $1000.

Professional culinary judges will have their final say on the top taco in town in early June.

Another highlight will be the Fiesta Bendigo Street Party in the Hargreaves Mall on Saturday 3 May, featuring the music, food, culture, fashion and dance of Mexico.

A wide range of activities, including Mexican cooking classes, film screenings and Frida Kahlo-inspired floral headpiece workshops will also take place.

Several Bendigo Tourism retailers have also embraced the theme with colourful displays and Mexican-inspired merchandise.

Mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said Fiesta Bendigo puts the city on the map as a must-visit destination and represents a major boost to the local economy.

“Fiesta Bendigo celebrates all things Mexican with plenty of colour, dance, food, music and a great program line up,” she said.

“The program will be marketed throughout Victoria and interstate alongside the exhibition. I encourage (everyone) to take a look and join the fun.”

The full program is available on the Bendigo Region website.
