Chorale and choir’s voices to blend
A GRAND choir of more than sixty singers, made up of members of the Bendigo Chorale and Glen Eira City Choir, are set to come together to present Karl Jenkins’ Requiem and Mozart’s Laudate Dominum at St. Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in the CBD.
Four months of practice with musical director Elena Vashavskaya, who also conducts the Glen Eira City Choir, and accompanist Rosa Hwang, will culminate in the performance on Saturday 29 June at 2.30pm.
The group will be joined by an ensemble made up of horn, flute, harp, violin, percussion and piano.
Bendigo Chorale president David Wright said one of the interesting parts of the Jenkins piece is that it has harp, flute, horn and timpani, alongside the piano accompaniment.
“The timpani plays quite a big part of the work, particularly with the Japanese works within the work,” he said. “There’s also violin and then we have a vocal soloist as well.
“Karl Jenkins is of Welsh descent, so that’s where all the singing comes from.
“The work is a requiem and parts of it are reasonably traditional, while other parts are a little bit contemporary. He is a master at putting these sounds together.
“Some of the work is so quiet you can hardly hear it, and then some of it’s so boisterous and loud that it dominates the space.”
