Explore Eaglehawk by foot for fitness and friendship

Eaglehawk Explorers volunteer organiser Brian McPherson and BCHS Health Promotion Officer Moni Sonsuwan.

The service launched the new weekly Eaglehawk Explorers walking group on Wednesday 26 March and invites anyone over the age of 18 to take part.

Health Promotion Officer Moni Sonsuwan said after coordinating a walking group in White Hills for the past year, she can’t wait for one in the Borough.

“Hopefully we get a lot of people coming along,” Ms Sonsuwan said.

“We’ve had a lot of requests for this in Eaglehawk, and it was also suggested by our exercise physiologists.”

Ms Sonsuwan said walkers of all fitness levels are welcome, and in fact the group is a great option for anyone seeking to get back into exercising.

“People may be aiming to build bone strength, improve their physical fitness or increase their social connections,” she said.

“Whatever the reason, we encourage people to come along and try it.”

Brian McPherson did just that 12 months ago when he saw a flyer for the White Hills Wanderers in the BCHS Exercise Physiology gym.

“For me, I’m trying to be as healthy as I can be, but it’s also about engaging with other people – we have a chat, we have a walk and we have a laugh,” he said.

Participants can attend at their leisure and walk at their own pace.

Ms McPherson has enjoyed the group so much, he’s volunteered to be the Eaglehawk Explorers’ group organiser. And as a retired transport manager, he’s no stranger to getting things moving along.

“It’s about getting the group together and enjoying ourselves,” he said. “A lot of people don’t enjoy walking on their own and I think the group environment is better.

“But there’s no pressure on anyone, they can come at their leisure and walk at their own pace.”

Mr McPherson said he’s never walked around the Eaglehawk lakes before, so is looking forward to getting to know the area alongside others.

The group will meet each Wednesday at 9.30am at the gym equipment beside Lake Neangar off Simpsons Road, Eaglehawk.
