TWO four-week Art Workshops for Kids programs are taking place at The Old Church on the Hill in Russell Street.
The first, tailored to five to seven year olds commenced yesterday and continues until 14 August, while the second, designed for eight to 12 year olds, runs from 28 August to 14 September.
At $99 per child for the four sessions, participants will be given the opportunity to experiment with new techniques and mediums with all materials provided.
Workshop facilitator Winnie Lim, an honours graduate from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (Visual Arts), said each class is generally based on a theme, without any particular focus on the end product.
“I want them to focus on the processes and the mediums so they can make new things rather than just follow an example,” she said.
“I also like to (cover) traditional crafts, so they can learn about paper making and embroidery and things like that.
“First and foremost it’s about having fun. If they’re not having fun, they won’t pick up on the skills that you’re trying to teach them.
“Adults expect you to teach them tips and tricks on how to do things easier, whereas kids just want to enjoy themselves.
“It’s a different kind of ballgame, which is really good.”
Ms Lim said making art with kids is an amazing experience.
“It’s always different – they’re pretty intuitive and there’s no boundaries,” she said.
“It’s always out of the blue.”
