Local artist profile: Rachel Hunter

THIS week we chat with photographer Rachel Hunter, who said since she discovered photography in Year 10 she’s been dedicated to honing her skills and sharing her love for the medium with others.

What initially motivated you to become a photographer?

I discovered photography in Year 10, using film and dark rooms, and was instantly hooked. I was fascinated by capturing an instant moment that could be looked back on.

The hands-on experience with film made me realise that photography was my true passion and something I wanted to pursue as a career.

Ever since then, I’ve been dedicated to honing my skills and sharing my love for photography with others.

How would you describe your style?

My photography style is clean, bold, and candid. I strive to capture authentic moments that tell a genuine story.

Over the years, I’ve developed this style by focusing on natural light and vibrant colours, which help bring out the true essence of each moment.

Which other photographers inspire you?

I’ve been inspired by many photographers over the years, recently including Janelle Elise, Benj Haisch, and Rachel Vanoven.

Their use of light and colour is captivating and has influenced my work.

Janelle Elise creates bright, airy, and romantic scenes that feel timeless.

Benj Haisch is known for his vibrant, adventurous compositions, often set in stunning natural landscapes.

Rachel Vanoven excels in capturing intimate and emotive family portraits, highlighting genuine connections and heartfelt moments.

Each of them has a unique way of telling stories through their images, which I find incredibly inspiring and motivating in my own photography journey.

What are some highlights you have from your career so far?

Highlights of my career include attending weddings where you can truly see how much the day means to everyone involved.

The emotion in those moments is overwhelming, and I feel very honoured to be able to capture it.

I also have a special appreciation for photographing multi-generational families. Seeing the connections and links between generations is incredibly meaningful and rewarding.

These moments make me feel grateful for the opportunity to document such precious memories.

I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I love as a career.

Is there anything in particular you’re working on now?

Right now, I’m focusing on extended family shoots with multiple generations, which have become quite popular.

These sessions are great for capturing the connections between family members across different generations.

I’m also working closely with my wedding clients to ensure everything is set for the upcoming wedding season.

Additionally, I’m always exploring new techniques and ideas to keep my work fresh and engaging.

What would you say to young regional aspiring photographers who are thinking of making a go of the creative life?

Give it a go! There will certainly be challenges along the way, but unless you try, you’ll always wonder what could have been.

The journey is incredibly fulfilling and worth every effort.
