THIS week we chat with eclectic artist Rhayven Jane, whose cross-discipline practice includes drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, photography and digital illustration.

What motivated you to become a multi-disciplinary artist?

I’ve always been artistic – it’s something that’s been an intrinsic passion for me, and the way I expressed myself creatively has evolved over time since I was very little.

After becoming a mother in 2017, successfully completing my Certificate IV in Visual Arts and then experiencing significant life changes in 2021, I found a newly strengthened motivation to pursue my art career more seriously, with a renewed burst of creativity.

I was also lucky enough to work as a creative artist at Pinot & Picasso Bendigo up until recently, which was such a fabulous job!

How would you describe your style?

I enjoy vibrant colour, bold and expressive linework and layered details.

I describe myself as an ‘eclectic artist’ due to the diversity of my work and ways in which I create my art pieces – I want my style to be distinctive, but my art seeks to move outside of any restrictive definition, evolving as my career grows.

Drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, photography and digital illustration are amongst my favourite mediums.

I have a strong affinity for the bizarre and unusual, with a particular fondness for insects, which I love using as references for my artworks.

Which other artists inspire you?

Some of the many artists who spark inspiration for me include Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali, Del Kathryn Barton, Patricia Piccinini, Banksy, Mark Ryden, Lora Zombie and MC Escher.

What are some highlights you have from your career so far?

The most powerful moment of my career so far has been participating as one of the chosen artists in the Women of Gold project, launched by founder of We Are Untold, Megan Champion.

My colourful artwork titled ‘Heart of Gold’ is currently exhibited on a large-scale billboard in Pennyweight Walk.

This opportunity has been life changing as an artist and provided a platform for visibility and creative freedom.

How can people check out your work?

I’m always posting on Instagram @rhayven.art so please follow me to stay updated!

My website rhayvenjane.com is currently in progress.

Do you have any exhibitions coming up?

Currently, I have a little studio space underway as part of Hargreaves Studios (Level 1, 325 Hargreaves Street) which will be revealed during the upcoming Bendigo Open Studios weekend.

I’m very excited to focus on upcoming art and creative projects in this new space.

I also recently participated in the Incubator professional development program run through Emporium Creative Hub, working on an exciting passion project, combining art, advocacy and wellbeing – The Glimmer Initiative: a survivor-led organisation providing accessible support, safety, sanctuary, education and creative opportunities for women and children affected by family violence in the Bendigo region.

I’m currently seeking collaboration, funding, partnership and support to get this project off the ground, so please follow The Glimmer Initiative on Instagram @the.glimmer.initiative and send an email to [email protected] to discuss the possibilities.

What would you say to young regional aspiring artists who are thinking of making a go of the creative life?

Take those opportunities that speak to you and get involved in your community to find those creative projects and network with others who understand your passion. You will find your place that nurtures you as an artist – just keep creating!
