THE just-turned decade-old Ulumbarra Theatre will be enveloped in enigma in a couple of weeks when Spellbound – A Night of Magic & Grand Illusion hits the stage.
Starring magician Apollo Jackson, the production features cutting-edge stage technology combined with levitations, vanishes, mentalism and a “death-defying escape” over the space of one hour and 45 minutes.
Jackson said his passion for magic was forged as a child during a visit to a carnival where, upon seeing a magician perform for the first time, he became “absolutely obsessed”.
“My parents got me a magic kit for my (next) birthday and from that moment I was just hungry to learn more,” he said.
Jackson began to perform in front of family and at school talent shows before a chance meeting in a magic shop changed things forever.
“When I was a teenager I met a well-known magician named Sam Angelico and he became my mentor,” he said.
“My parents used to have him over one (or) two times a week and he’d sit with me and teach me the history of magic, making my own props and putting together routines.
“That was my university, I guess.”
Fast forward to 2025 and Jackson said he’s “ecstatic” to have been invited to perform in Spellbound.
“To work with such an amazing crew that are so professional, and in such a great production, I’m very, very grateful,” he said.
“If you’re looking for an amazing night out, then this is the show for you – there’s literally something in there for everyone to enjoy.
“There’s a lot of stuff that you’ll never ever have seen before, so you’re in for an absolute treat.”
Spellbound – A Night of Magic & Grand Illusion takes place on Saturday 17 May at Ulumbarra Theatre from 7pm.
