Quirk-laden Capper hour a candid affair

CULT absurdist comic Nick Capper is bound for Bendigo in one week’s time for the express purpose of presenting his latest hour of material, Broke, Useless & Sterile.

Fresh from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and visits to Adelaide Fringe, Brisbane and Sydney, Capper’s show is somewhat autobiographical, laying bare the various aspects of his life hinted at in its title.

The former country boy, who grew up near the border of New South Wales and Queensland, said developing each touring stand-up show is “always different”.

This time around, a lot of content was devised in his local library in Melbourne.

“I’d just walk there with no phone and try to write for two to three hours a day and come up with ideas,” he said.

“Then, basically, there’s this psychotic thing where I perform it in front of my wife, who’s very judgemental.

“It’s a really hardcore process, but it’s probably my best show yet.”

Capper said it has thus far been received “really, really well”.

“I sold out 11 out of 13 shows at the Comedy Festival, then I had a sold out run in Brisbane and two sold out shows in Sydney,” he said.

While he encouraged local comedy fans to come along to his Bendigo leg, he warned “don’t come to learn anything”.

“However, for anyone who’s been diagnosed with ADHD, or is going through IVF, or is bad with money, they’ll definitely resonate with it,” Capper said.

Broke, Useless & Sterile takes place at the Black Swan Hotel in McCrae Street next Friday 26 June.
