FOR those who have ever had an inkling to try out line dancing, a free-for-all class coming up at Hargreaves Mall next Wednesday might be of interest.

Led by Bronwyn Williams from Let’s Dance Bendigo in Spring Gully, participants can look forward to a casual session that will take them through the basics of classic moves including Stand By Me, Cowboy Boogie and the Cupid Shuffle.

Ms Williams said line dancing in its simplest form involves participants continuing steps for a number of bars.

“You keep repeating the bars,” she said.

“For the raw beginners we teach very basic steps like the grapevine, then we might do some step taps and some heels.

“Then it can move along to quite advanced moves where we have restarts to match the music and quite complicated footwork and timing – throwing your hat up in the air and catching it sort of moves.”

She said getting involved in the popular pastime is a great way to build confidence and meet fellow community members.

“It’s really uplifting as well,” Ms Williams said.

“You’re so present when you’re learning to dance. After you’ve (mastered) a few steps you always feel so much better about getting back out into the world.

“For me, dance, in terms of improving mental and physical health, it’s got it all covered.”

Line Dancing with Let’s Dance Bendigo takes place on Wednesday 22 January from 11am to midday as part of the Summer Fun + Games in the Mall program.

Bookings aren’t required.
