LOCAL artist Garry Taylor will be on site at Dudley House in View Street over the weekend to show art-lovers around his new solo exhibition, Still.

The exhibition combines several of his older works with a series of newer paintings created for the show.

Born in Heathcote, Taylor, who said he’s always “been obsessed” with drawing, began his practice in the 1980s focussing on the natural world – birds, plants and insects – before crossing to still life imagery.

“I use gouache, watercolour, pencil and ink to achieve my pictures,” he said.

“Traditional realism is how I would describe my work (and) sometimes it will have a touch of surrealism in it.”

Taylor said the element he enjoys the most about making his finely detailed art is the opportunity to express himself.

“It’s also very rhythmical and it’s almost like while you’re painting, you feel mesmerised,” he said.

“I work on one painting at a time for two hours every afternoon and they take perhaps a week to finish.”

He invited “anyone who’s interested in art” to come and say hello, and potentially make a purchase, over the next few days.

“I can’t guarantee that everyone will like my paintings but I’m confident that my work is of a good standard,” he said.

“If you like realism in art, I would encourage people to come and see it.”

Still by Garry Taylor continues until Sunday at Dudley House, 60 View Street. Doors are open from 9am to 5pm.
