Uplifting choir performance to spread the joy
AN eclectic local socially inclusive community choir that celebrates connection, joy, diversity and belonging through song will perform a special concert on 5 December at Bendigo Library.
The Choice Voices Choir, founded 15 years ago by well-known folk musician James Rigby, includes members who live with physical, intellectual and mental health disabilities.
Mr Rigby said while the choir recruits actively to communities with disabilities or mental health challenges, it’s also “open to absolutely everyone.”
“There’s another cohort who come along (just) because they love singing,” he said.
“A lot of them get a lot of satisfaction from the knowledge that they’re helping to support a choir with some people who do need engagement, who do need help just to get through their weeks.”
Mr Rigby said the concert will be “full of heart.”
“When people come along and see us sing, it’s thought provoking,” he said.
“It’s holding a mirror up to the Bendigo community, because in most people’s average working week, they’re only engaging with the mainstream, the high functioning, the people with privilege.
“Here you’ll see a bunch of people that don’t have all the advantages that many of us enjoy, yet you’re hearing a really strong expression of joy and love and care.”
The performance takes place on Thursday 5 December from 5pm to 6pm.
You can reserve your spot on the Eventbrite website.
