You won’t be disappointed – Bendigo Theatre Company presents a timeless thriller!
HAVE you ever wondered where the term ‘gaslight’ came from?
‘Gaslighting’ is defined as manipulating someone using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning and has in recent years become quite well used.
In 1938, Patrick Hamilton wrote a three-act play called ‘Gaslight’, coining the term that we use today.
It tells the story of Jack and Bella Manningham, living in 1880s London; Bella is unwell and seems to be constantly forgetting where household items have been misplaced.

Her husband is growing frustrated, threatening her with doctors and psychiatric hospitals and causing Bella distress and beginning to believe that she is losing her mind, like her mother.
Even the maids, Elizabeth and Nancy, have taken notice of Bella’s stress.
All along there are hidden mysteries within the house where they reside; dimming gaslights and footsteps heard from above the bedroom.

One evening, a strange older gentleman enters the house whilst Jack is out, looking to help Bella with her stress. But who is he, and what does he know? Is Bella truly going mad? And what are the seemingly endless mysteries of the house?
All will be revealed when a brilliant cast from Bendigo Theatre Company presents this timeless thriller in an equally brilliant set at the Patricia Lyon Blackbox Theatre, 15-17 Allingham Street, Golden Square for a 10-show season commencing May 22.
