A weekend of local art
THE Anglican Parish of Kangaroo Flat’s winter art show is on again.
Held in spring last year after a previous cancellation, the three-day event will showcase just under 200 works from about 60 artists.
Prizes are up for grabs in categories of oil, acrylic, watercolour, and other media, with works to be judged by local art veteran Geoff Paynter.
Paynter has judged and entered in Rotary art shows across Victoria and is a regular exhibitor at the Bendigo Art Show during Easter.
He said he always enjoys entries that push the boundaries.
“Some artists believe if they can reproduce reality that’s good, that’s what their striving to do,” he said.
“I like creativity, I like people who’ve taken a subject and treated it creatively. That’s a feature of my judging.”
Paynter said he’s received plenty of invitations to judge community art shows, and it’s great to see that casual artists have a regular avenue to exhibit their work and learn from others again.
“As an artist, when we go to an art show, you always see things which you’re attracted to and you think that’s a great concept, a great idea and interpretation… when you see the work of others you learn from it,” he said.
The winter art show is on from 10am to 4pm this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 per person and children under 16, accompanied by an adult are free.
Winners of the categories will be announced in a special presentation on Friday at 7.30pm. Tickets for the evening are $10, cash only.
