BSSC’s historic G Block upgrades unveiled
BENDIGO Senior Secondary College’s historic G Block has received a facelift thanks to a grant from the State Government.
Recent works at the college costing $10 million also delivered an upgraded student services area, a refurbished trade training centre and a new courtyard.
Given the historical significance of the building, which was originally constructed in 1870, the renovations had to be carried out under the strict supervision of Heritage Victoria.
As a result, the fundamental heritage values of the building have been retained alongside modernised classrooms, staff areas, toilet facilities, locker bays and casual student study spaces.
G Block was originally built in two stages. The first stage saw the construction of the initial school building on the site, followed by the construction of another building in 1913 that extended and enclosed the area to create a quadrangle at its centre.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards thanked BSSC students, staff and the broader school community for their support while the works took place, and gave “a huge shoutout” to Y2 Architecture and Raysett Constructions for their involvement in the project.
“These refurbished facilities are wonderful examples of our commitment to giving Victorian children the first-rate education they deserve,” she said.
Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan said every Victorian student should have access to a quality education close to home, regardless of their background or where they live.
“These works are fantastic and will support students and staff for many years to come,” she said.
