Ceramic award postponed

THE Clunes Ceramic Award committee have postponed their entry deadline and showcase until 2022.

Committee chair Graeme Johnstone said it was a sad decision to make, but the safest choice, considering COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria and beyond.

Some ceramicists who enter the award are local, but many live and practice outside of the state.

“Despite granting extension for entries, the number of submissions were greatly reduced by restrictions on studio use, shortage of class clay and physical limitations of ceramic artists,” he said.

“Current COVID restrictions are varied across all states and lockdowns are managed in different ways.

“Physical attendances may be in doubt, or limited, and a physical exhibition is essential for both artists and judges, not to mention visitors and those who purchase works of such a high value.”

Mr Johnstone said the committee also wished to avoid any potential transportation issues generated by the pandemic for ceramic artists posting their piece or works.

The Clunes Ceramic Award committee are also aware that their sponsors have been negatively affected by recent lockdowns.

“Dates will be distributed widely about November or December, hopefully,” Mr Johnstone said.

“Entries that have already been submitted will be retained as entries. If artists wish to replace their entry, that can be done, and new entries can be submitted under dates advertised widely towards the end of 2021.

“We are very keen to have an exceptional award and exhibition. Our sponsors are keen, as are the viewing public.”

Mr Johnstone said committee was grateful to entering ceramic artists, judges, sponsors, volunteers, and the Clunes community for their support in ensuring the event is a success when it can safely go ahead.
