A LOCAL coalition made up of government, community and service organisations has released a calendar of events and activities for the community to get involved in as part of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence initiative.

The Greater Bendigo Against Family Violence Committee’s calendar covers events running until and including Wednesday 10 December.

Copies are available at City Library branches or you can download one from its website.

Committee chair Margaret Singe said 16 Days of Activism encourages people to work together to prevent incidents of gender-based violence.

“This campaign is about raising awareness and (prompting) action,” she said.

“Whether it’s attending an event, learning where to get help or supporting someone you know – every step matters.

“Gender-based violence is prevalent in our community.

“It’s preventable and something seen or heard at one of our events could be a step towards prevention.

“We all have a role to play in building a future where everyone is safe, equal and respected.”

Women’s Health Loddon Mallee CEO Kellie Dunn said preventing gender-based violence begins with recognising that everyone deserves the freedom to live and express themselves authentically.

“When we embrace diversity and champion equality, we lay the foundation for lasting change,” she said.

“Join us in shaping a future where gender-based violence is no longer part of the story, and where every person can thrive.”

Residents are invited to an event today at the Bendigo Tennis Centre featuring speakers from the Carlton Respects Program and former AFL beanpole Ben Brown.

Playing Our Part: A Community Conversation on Equality, Respect and Leadership will explore how sport can help build a culture of respect, equality and safety.

Many other events and activities are free to attend and will be held at a range of locations across Greater Bendigo.
