Dancers in town to ascend

A PRODUCTION by the Sydney Dance Company will leap onto the Ulumbarra Theatre stage this Wednesday night.

The production titled Ascent is made up of three different works from Australian and international choreographers with a focus on contemporary movement through to “futuristic experimentation”.

Dancer, Emily Seymour, said she is excited to bring the show to Bendigo.

“We’ve got one work with our artistic director, Rafael Bonachela,” she said. “This explores the connection between four dancers as they discover their bodies and their emotions which is special to see.

“For the second work in the triple bill, we work with a renowned choreographer Marina Mascarell. In this one, we are working with ropes and silks, and we are working with sailcloth material.

“There are seven of us in that work and we explore nature and how we can move our bodies and how our bodies and nature are connected together.”

For the third dance, Seymour said things get a little crazier.

“Finally, we work with Helpmann Award winner, Antony Hamilton,” she said. “The music is so insane. It’s so much fun to dance to.

“The music is by Julian Hamilton, who is Antony’s brother, and he is a member of The Presets and it’s this techno music slash contemporary dance.

“The difference from the first work to the third work is extraordinary, it’s such a varying range of pieces throughout the night. I think the audience will absolutely love it.”

Getting out to regional centres she doesn’t always get to see is a highlight of the job Seymour said.

“I’m not sure if we come to Bendigo every single year, but we do a regional tour,” she said. “It’s so special for our connection with communities around Australia. It always makes my heart so warm.

“Being a Sydney girl, I think it’s really important for me to get out and see the areas I don’t usually travel to otherwise.

“I’m very grateful to have this opportunity to be doing what I love and sharing that love with everyone around Australia.”
