DO you have a inquisitive kid eager to leave the house and satisfy their curiosity about how the world works?

From 23 to 31 October, Discovery Science and Technology Centre is running a free Sizzling Science workshop program as part of Children’s Week.

Early years programs developer at Discovery, Angela Holdaway, said the program is designed for kids aged three to five years old.

“We engage them in scientific concepts through storybooks,” she said.

“We’re going to read a book all about science and do some demonstrations of different experiments set up around the space.”

Ms Holdaway said it’s important for children to have an opportunity to engage with STEM from a young age.

“STEM in the early years is vitally important because kids who engage in STEM tend to do better later on in life, they go on and further their careers through university or higher education, compared to those students who don’t have STEM experiences,” she said.

The Sizzling Science workshop will explore  concepts in chemical, physical and biological sciences and utlise Discovery’s unique hands-on experiments and contraptions.

Ms Holdaway said it’s been great having kids back in Discovery after being closed for extended periods over the last two years due to COVID-19 lockdowns.

“Families come and say we’ve just missed having somewhere to go, and coming here the kids have got heaps of things to engage with and it’s educational as well,” she said.

“You’ll get kids who are just so excited about these things and they’ll want to know why it works and what happens if you do this, just sparking that curiosity is a really rewarding part of my job.”

Current COVID-19 restrictions allow for 20 people in Discovery at a time, and a morning and afternoon session will run for the Sizzling Science workshop.

Bookings are essential for weekend sessions and can be made online at discovery.asn.au.
