ALMOST half of the $21 million construction budget for the recently announced Bendigo Art Gallery redevelopment will be funded by private donors, it’s been revealed.

The Sidney Myer Fund and The Ian Potter Foundation will contribute $4 million and $3 million respectively, arts philanthropist Dr Mark Nelson will put forward $1.5 million, while a collection of other donors have so far provided almost $1 million.

City of Greater Bendigo mayor Cr Andrea Metcalf said the “incredible financial support” reflected the value of the gallery to Bendigo and Victoria.

“Two of Australia’s most respected philanthropic foundations connected to the arts have embraced the opportunity to support our redevelopment, recognising the vital connection of culture and creativity to our community and the local economy,” she said.

“In particular, we are delighted to have the support of the Sidney Myer Fund, a name that has had a long connection to Bendigo and also to the Gallery.”

Bendigo Art Gallery director Jessica Bridgfoot said the level of support has been unprecedented.

“(It’s) an acknowledgement of the transformative impact arts and culture can have on a regional community and we truly appreciate our donors’ investment,” she said.

“During the construction phase, residents and patrons of the Gallery will have the opportunity to be part of this exciting project and make a philanthropic contribution of their own.

“We know the Gallery is treasured by our community and there will be many people, no matter the size of their donation, who will want to contribute to this transformative project for the Gallery and Greater Bendigo.”

The Gallery’s final major exhibition before closing, Frida Kahlo: In her own image, finishes up on Sunday 13 July.
