The initiative aims to reward students participating in volunteering and drive more volunteers to Bendigo Health, while inspiring young people in the community to pursue higher education in health-related courses at La Trobe.
“This exciting partnership means student volunteers see first-hand the impact and importance of volunteering while at the same time gaining experience in the healthcare environment,” said director of volunteer services at Bendigo Health Sharon Walsh.
“The pathway from volunteering to tertiary education and eventual employment demonstrates how volunteering can open doors to a career while supporting a future healthcare workforce for Bendigo Health and our region.
“Five students who’ve volunteered at the hospital this year have now applied for La Trobe’s Aspire program, in addition to six applicants last year.”
“Volunteering at Bendigo Health is a powerful way for local students to give back and it can also help them step into their future careers,” said La Trobe Bendigo campus head Marg O’Rourke.
“Aspire recognises students who are already making a difference in their communities. For many who volunteer, it builds confidence, leadership, social skills and a sense of purpose.
“This partnership not only creates meaningful volunteer opportunities for secondary school students but also plants the seed for a future in health.”
