DESIGNS on how a planned town square in Strathfieldsaye might look have been put out for feedback by City of Greater Bendigo staff.

The $1.4 million development is set for greenspace behind the current IGA supermarket on the corner of land allocated for the continuation of Apsley Lane and Wellesley Street.

The plans include a shared pathway on the current road easements linking Apsley Street and Strathfieldsaye Road.

City of Greater Bendigo acting director of presentation and assets director Chris Mitchell said the works would create public open space where people meet and attend events.

“It will also encourage future development of active retail and commercial spaces at ground level and apartment living on upper levels,” he said.

“One of the key actions of the UDF [Strathfieldsaye Town Centre Urban Design Framework] was the development of a central town square, community events, and gathering space in the heart of Strathfieldsaye town centre.

“A town square, gathering space was something the community said they wanted for the township and the City is now seeking community feedback on the plan.”

Also in the works are picnic lawns and the planting of trees, shrubs, and native grasses to provide shade and stormwater management.

Feedback is currently being sought on the designs via the municipal Let’s Talk website until Friday 28 July.
