BENDIGO Foodshare is celebrating a gargantuan achievement this month having reached 10 million kilos of rescued and donated food since it was established in 2013.

The milestone coincides with the launch of its Regular Giving Appeal, now in its second year.

The appeal invites locals to sign up as regular givers, allowing the charity to make sure it can continue rescuing surplus food and redistribute it to people experiencing food insecurity across central Victoria.

Foodshare CEO Michelle Murphy said every kilo represents not only a meal, but a family supported and a moment of relief.

“Reaching 10 million kilos is an incredible milestone and one that reflects the generosity of our whole community,” she said.

“Hundreds of volunteers and thousands of supporters over the past 13 years have aided our work so we can rescue surplus food that would otherwise be wasted, redistributing it through over 90 community organisations.”

Ms Murphy lamented that unfortunately demand shows no sign of easing anytime soon.

“We’re currently supporting 15,500 people every week across central Victoria who need help to put a meal on the table,” she said.

Currently 100 people donate each month to support Foodshare’s work – a group affectionately called the Food Champions.

This year it’s hoping to double the number of Regular Givers, asking people to sign up to contribute $20 per month to help meet ongoing demand.

“Regular giving provides stability,” Ms Murphy said.

“It allows us to plan ahead, keep our warehouse and vehicles running, purchase essential food items and support programs such as our youth cooking programs – all of which make a real, daily difference.

“When people give a small amount each month, it adds up to a big impact.”

Regular giver Bruce McKaskill said he donates as it provides security for Bendigo Foodshare to do what they do best.

“Their work goes on behind the scenes day-in, day-out,” he said.

“They constantly give and rarely ask, but they are always there for our community – filling the cracks, serving the needy, responding to disasters.”

Another major fundraiser for the organisation is also fast approaching – the Bendigo Easter Book Fair.

It’s due to be held from Good Friday, 3 April until Easter Monday, 6 April at MacGillivray Hall, 128 McCrae Street.

Doors open at 9am each day.
