From struggles to strength: empowering parents on International Women’s Day

Samara Mabbott hopes to inspire other women in taking their first steps towards a brighter future. Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services' Parent Pathways program helps parents overcome challenges around building a better future for themselves and their children.
At Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services, the Parent Pathways program is helping parents overcome those challenges, providing free support to help them gain confidence, explore study or employment options, and connect with vital services.
For Samara Mabbott, regional manager of Parent Pathways in Geelong and Ballarat, this mission is deeply personal.
“I know firsthand what it’s like to struggle, to feel isolated, and to fight for a better future – not just for myself, but for my son,” she said.
“Parent Pathways exists to make sure other parents don’t have to go through it alone.”
A personal journey of growth
Like many women, Samara faced obstacles in her career. As a young mother, she struggled to find stability. But with the right support, she was able to build a career that now helps others in similar situations.
Over seven years, she has worked her way up from a Parent Coach to a leader overseeing multiple regions, mentoring teams, and expanding the reach of Parent Pathways.
“I’ve been where many of our participants are now, and I want them to know there’s a way forward,” she said.

“If you know where to go for help, you won’t have the problems I had.”
How Parent Pathways is changing lives
Parent Pathways supports parents with young children by providing:
One-on-one coaching and career guidance
Help with confidence building and goal setting
Connection to study, training and job opportunities
Links to childcare and other community services
For many women, balancing parenting responsibilities while trying to plan for the future can feel overwhelming. Parent Pathways helps lighten that load, offering practical support and a network of encouragement.
A call to action for International Women’s Day
This International Women’s Day, Samara hopes to inspire other women—particularly mothers—to take the first step toward a brighter future.
“No matter where you are in your journey, you don’t have to do it alone,” she said.
“Parent Pathways is here to support you.”
If you have young children and want help planning your next steps, Parent Pathways is free and here to help.
