Get excited for science festival

AN international science festival is making an in-person comeback after being run online for the last few years.

Called Pint of Science, La Trobe University senior biomedical researcher and event coordinator Dr Donna Whelan said the aim of the festival is to bring science communication to local communities.

“The idea is really to get people doing science on the ground,” she said. “In our case, here at La Trobe University, the Discovery Centre, also out in the industry, to come and explain that to the general public.

“It’s all about exposing whoever turns up to new ideas and new areas of research and hopefully piquing that interest.”

A Pint of Science will see seven speakers across four events covering topics like dark matter and space, neurodiversity, the psychology of sleep, and molecular biology.

Dr Ashley Rozario is one of the speakers at the microbiology event and has been a postdoctoral researcher at La Trobe since last year.

“I’ll be talking about a new technique called expansion microscopy that allows us to see biological samples with better clarity,” said Dr Rozario.

“Getting better detail and clarity is important. Whatever we can do with technology to enhance the clarity will help our understanding with the larger health and disease questions out there.”
