BENDIGO Animal Relief Centre (BARC) wants to help cat owners in targeted areas of Bendigo to have their cats desexed.

The targeted areas are Heathcote, Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square, Eaglehawk and California Gully.

“The five targeted areas have the highest number of non-desexed cats,” BARC operations manager Fra Atyeo said.

“We received a cat desexing grant from the Animal Welfare league of Victoria and want to desex as many cats as we can.

“The City of Greater Bendigo has also contributed to the program.

“A few years ago, we held a similar campaign and numbers dropped significantly. The number of unplanned kittens was reduced by one-third.

“If you live in one of these five targeted suburbs and are caring for a cat that either lives in your house as part of your family, or in your yard as a community cat, we may be able to help you get that cat desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and registered for as little at $20.”

Residents with a concession card or those experiencing financial hardship are eligible.

“We also have help available for cat and dog owners outside the targeted areas,” Ms Atyeo said.
