AN innovative way of helping people facing financial strain this Christmas is hoped to assist food relief charity Bendigo Foodshare in meeting increased demand as the festive season fast approaches.

Reverse Advent Calendars, a multi-state program established in 2018 by York Street Church of Christ in Ballarat, asks donors to add a non-perishable pantry or toiletry item to a specially branded Advent box each day for 20 days.

Interested Bendigonians can either collect one box or several from Belle Property at 108 Pall Mall and return it by Thursday 19 December, which will then be distributed by Foodshare.

Local Reverse Advent Calendar coordinator Katherine Meerman said contributors don’t need to spend a lot.

“We’re very aware that asking the community to participate could be difficult for those who are struggling,” she said.

“We’re not asking for a huge financial commitment – just what you can. If you want to give back this Christmas this is a simple way to do it.

“You don’t know what’s happening behind closed doors in anyone’s home and you never know when you might need that help yourself.

“This is a way to help someone or a family, lighten their load, and take some stress off them. It’s a small way to make a big difference.”

Bendigo Foodshare CEO Michelle Murphy believes the program reflects what seems to be a growing desire for people to do something less commercial in this lead-up to Christmas.

“We’re seeing more corporate groups wanting to volunteer instead of having a party,” she said.

“I feel like this Calendar is part of that trend, where people want to step back from the commercialism of Christmas and help others.”

Ms Murphy said the Calendar is “a practical way for people to make a difference.”

“Even if you can only contribute five or ten items, it will still be very much appreciated.”

Bendigo Foodshare will be running a series of pop-up Christmas pantries in partnership with Rotary to distribute the boxes.
