House connects Kangaroo Flat community
KANGAROO Flat Community House is one of seven neighbourhood houses in the Bendigo region and sees about two-hundred-and-fifty people come through its doors a week.
The centre hosts the activities of the Bendigo Filipino Foundation, such as its dance and costume rehearsals.
It also provides weekly support groups for multicultural residents, and has programs involving meditation, photography, community gardens, basic computer skills, food assistance, and others.
Centre manager Tracy Moss is also the president of the Regional Association of Neighbourhood and Community Houses, and also manager of Eaglehawk Community House.
She said neighbourhood houses are vital centres within communities to bring people together and improve its members’ lives.
“Neighbourhood houses bring people within the local area together to meet, socialise, and mobilise to achieve positive community outcomes,” said Ms Moss.
“They strengthen community spirit, pride and connection.”
The programs offered by neighbourhood facilities such as Kangaroo Flat Community House are low or no-cost.
This enables people to join groups and do activities which strengthen their livelihoods without having to fork out money they might not have.
“Neighbourhood Houses combat social isolation and loneliness,” said Ms Moss.
“Being accessible, non-threatening and inclusive spaces that welcome people from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, ability or economic status.
“They provide the opportunity for people to mix, learn from each other, and support each other.
“Many Neighbourhood Houses are also involved in community partnerships with other local service providers, small businesses, and community groups, to maximise their impact and form stronger connections within the local community.”
