Intersection action urged
NATIONALS Member for Northern Victoria Gaelle Broad has called for the emergency upgrade of an intersection in Axedale, including the installation of flashing lights, after witnessing an accident there.
“I was driving along Mclvor Highway through Axedale when suddenly a delivery van came across the intersection at Mitchell Street and hit a car on the opposite side of the road,” she said.
“I stopped as a witness, and was standing on the side of the road. Moments later a large truck failed to stop at the intersection and a car had to slam on its brakes to avoid another collision.”
Ms Broad said there was also an incident in January when two trucks collided after one failed to give way, and just before Christmas, a car containing five children was hit by a vehicle that had pulled out.
“Local residents have reported an average of one crash a month, and one local resident of 30 years has seen a lot of crashes on the corner, including two that have been fatal,” she said.
Advocates in Axedale have written to the Premier as the location is in her electorate, according to Ms Broad.
“The Premier raised it with the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, and works were due to be completed in March this year, but it appears as though little has been done,” she said.
“Given the responsibility for this intersection lies with the state government I urge them to begin urgent works to improve the safety of this intersection.”
