Keeping carers in mind
CARERS across Loddon Mallee are being invited to access a range of free activities designed to promote good health and wellbeing.
In April, mental health service Mind Australia launched its Bendigo Carer Program, which will run until the end of June.
Group facilitator Louise Osland said the initiative comes thanks to a Supporting Carers Locally grants program from the State Government’s department of fairness, families and housing.
“The purpose of the grant is to assist with activities that strengthen the health and wellbeing of carers,” she said.
“Mind Australia is a community mental health organisation that has been delivering carers services in Melbourne for some years,” she said.
“With recognition through the royal commission into mental health of the need and contribution of carers, this grant and the funding has sprung from the government providing more opportunities for services to support carers.”
Ms Osland said the activities available for carers include a pet parade at Lake Neangar, seeing BLUE: The Songs of Joni Mitchell at the Capital Theatre, an AfroFun dance workshop at the Old Church on the Hill, a pamper day, and a wellbeing and self-care workshop led by artist Meredith Gaston.
“The program draws on the fact that health for people might be spending time with their pets, it could be catching up with other carers and having lunch, it might be getting out into nature and going for a walk,’ Ms Osland said. “We hope to offer something for everyone.
“We’re not targeting any particular group of carers; we’re hoping to be inclusive and provide some really enjoyable and interesting opportunities for carers through the program.”
