Laid-back grooves for men’s health at the Cambrian
MOVEMBER has been raising money and awareness for men’s health issues for more than twenty years, and later this month Bendigo people will be able to contribute to the cause through a free event at the Cambrian Hotel.
Mo-Funk will feature the Axis of Awesome team of Jason Taverner, Rohan McCullough and Brett Henery providing background music for a laid-back Saturday afternoon in the Cambrian courtyard, with all contributions going to the Movember effort.
In Mr Taverner’s words, the three are all “old” DJs who met while working in the Bendigo nightclub scene in the 1990s and formed a personal and professional bond.
“We’ve been the best of mates ever since,” he said.
After a successful Movember event last year, the trio approached the Cambrian with the latest fundraising idea, the hotel was all for it, and all is now in readiness for Saturday 23 November.
Mr Taverner said the event, which starts at 3pm, will not be a ‘rave’ or a typical nightclub session.
“It’s very much a relaxed, chilled afternoon,” he said. “We’ll be playing some good background music.”
Disco, boogie, funk, soul, hip hop, pop, cheesy dance music and more will flow from their turntables as the three provide a backdrop to an easygoing afternoon.
“We’ll be providing the soundtrack to the afternoon and people can support the cause,” Mr Taverner said.
They’ll be performing under their respective stage names of Ro-Dog, Brett H and Jason T.
Mr Taverner said donations can be made through a QR code on the Movember website (au.movember.com/team/2453280) or by gold coin donation on the day.
Entry will be free.
Mr Taverner said the Movember movement began primarily as a support and awareness movement for men’s health – specifically prostate cancer – but had evolved from its South Australian origins to encompass wider issues such as testicular cancer and mental health.
It has reportedly raised more than $170 million worldwide.
