A SERIES of free cyber resilience sessions where local residents can obtain tips on how to protect themselves from scams and stay safe online will be held in Long Gully, Kangaroo Flat, Bendigo and Huntly early next month.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to identify and avoid common phone scams, protect their devices and securely save passwords, plus spot spam and scams in text messages and emails.
They’ll also be shown how to access sites and apps that can help them improve their overall cyber security measures.
Plus, they’ll have the chance to record a message for identity theft and cyber support specialist IDCARE, which is hosting the workshops, to play back to a scammer.
Community partnerships manager at the City of Greater Bendigo Andie West said scams are widespread nowadays and many unsuspecting people, particularly the elderly, are falling victim to them.
“The best way to avoid being scammed is to arm yourself with the information you need to avoid them and stay safe online,” she said.
“The sessions are free, but bookings are essential, and (are) a great opportunity for our local residents to learn some important information.”
The session times are as follows – Tuesday 1 April, Long Gully Community Centre (10am to 11.30am) and Kangaroo Flat Library (1.30pm to 3pm), and Wednesday 2 April, Bendigo Gov Hub (9.30am to 11am) and Huntly Community Hub (2.30pm to 4pm).
