LEGO paradise (with coffee and cake) opens in CBD

KIDS and adults alike will be thrilled to find out that one of the most popular hobby-pastime products of all time – LEGO – now has its own cafe-style home right in the heart of town.

There’s no surprise that Bendigo Golden Brick Cafe is run by a couple of absolute LEGO fanatics and it features Bendigo’s biggest range of new and preloved LEGO sets, minifigures, parts and merchandise.

Owner Dave Annison, who opened the venue with daughter Mikayla (who learnt her trade at nearby top-notch venues Indulge Fine Belgian Chocolates and Wine Bank on View), said LEGO is something that’s become a big part of his and his family’s life.

“We’ve had the business up and running from home for about four or five years (but) I always felt that a move into town would be great,” he said.

“To add the cafe and host parties in the space – that’s one of the reasons why this occurred.

“I think it’s great, I love it, it’s really fun – the feedback’s been overwhelmingly positive, so we’re really thankful for that.

“There’s been a lot of support; it’s all been super positive, which is wonderful.”

Mr Annison said the venture has never been a “let’s make money” thing.

“It’s more that we love LEGO and Mikayla’s always been in hospitality doing great food and coffee, so combining everything and working with the family has been a great experience,” he said.

“To be constantly surrounded by what you love, it’s not hard work because if you enjoy it, you enjoy it.

“LEGO people are always up for a chat and enjoy looking around and seeing what’s here – it’s over 90 years old so generations of families enjoy it and it’s not hard to sell.

“It’s a good quality product, so people know what they’re getting; it’s one of those things that everyone loves.”

The cafe can be found at shop 31/7 High Street, Bendigo (previously Bendigo Ice Creamery).

It’s open from 10am to 5.30pm on weekdays and 10am to 4pm on weekends.
