LEGO was the word of the day at Hargreaves mall last week as local kids, big and small, were invited to contribute to a tile made from the building blocks for a mosaic.

Bendigo Lego Users Group hosted the two-day event that saw the creation of a spring inspired design as part of the City’s Bloom celebrations.

Member of the Bendigo Lego Users Group, Kara Harris, said the activity had been popular, with people making tiles nearly all morning on Friday.

“It’s a nice hands-on activity where people come back the next day and are like ‘Ooh I did this section’,” Ms Harris said.

The design for the mosaic was created by the group especially for the Bloom campaign and was segmented into hundreds of smaller tiles.

Participants at the event received a tile on arrival which they completed from an array of coloured Lego blocks and once finished was added to the wall.

“Every mosaic we do is different,” Ms Harris said. “Basically, we say this is the image we’re going for, these are our colours and then we make it all work together.”

The Bendigo Lego Users Group has been running for nearly 10 years and in addition to monthly meetings, the group regularly creates mosaics for community events.

“We’ve got one coming up at the Bendigo Show, so we’ve a mosaic artwork that matches the season,” Ms Harris said.

Another major event in the groups calendar is Bendigo Bricks, which takes place annually in April.

“We have lots of exhibitors come from all around Australia and they display their builds,” Ms Harris said.
