THE Bendigo Library gardens will spring to life on the last day of January with a vibrant display of traditional dance and acrobatics, featuring a Chinese New Year performance from the Central Victorian Lion Team.

Following its establishment in 2006, the Central Victorian Lion Team has become well known throughout Victoria and interstate, entertaining people at festivals, parades, “business blessings” and many other functions and events.

The original Lion Team has grown to include a girls’ traditional Chinese dance team, called Fu Wa, plus a Dragon team.

CVLT president Garry Sea said the New Year performance will feature all three groups.

“The performance commences with a Southern Lion Team traditional blessing,” he said.

“This is performed at the start of every Chinese Lion dance performance. Each team will feature for approximately 10 minutes with an exciting and colourful showcase of traditional Chinese dance.”

Fu Wa is a girls’ traditional Chinese dance team.

Mr Sea said the dance teams have grown to more than 100 members over the past 15 years and are happy to welcome anyone new willing to give it a try.

“CVLT always warmly welcomes any new members for each of our three teams,” he said.

“We offer a free four-week trial, where anyone interested can come along to training to have a look at what we do and join in if they wish.

“We have always placed a very strong emphasis on being a family oriented organisation that accepts new members on an equal level, therefore, placing everyone as equal value to each team, regardless of initial ability.”

For all enquiries call Mr Sea on 0438 590 318.

The Chinese New Year: Traditional Welcome takes place on Monday, 31 January from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
