Local artist profile: Alicia Huddy
THIS week we chat with an amazing local multi-disciplinary artist, Alicia Huddy, a unique talent who is on the up in a big way.
What initially motivated you to take up art as a practice?
I have always loved creating. The sheer joy of bringing something new into existence, expressing myself visually, and exploring the limitless possibilities of imagination has been a driving force behind my artistic journey. From an early age, I discovered that art provided me with a unique outlet for self-expression and a means to communicate ideas and emotions that words alone could not capture.
The act of creating art has always been a deeply fulfilling and transformative experience for me, igniting a passion that continues to motivate and inspire me to this day.
How would you describe your own style and how did you develop it?
It is vibrant, bold, and quite often found in the streets. I gravitate towards using vibrant colours that evoke energy and excitement.
A notable aspect of my style is the use of thick, bold lines, which stem from my personal experience of not having perfect eyesight. These lines help me create emphasis and clarity. Inspired by the urban environment, graffiti, and murals, I have developed a style that pays homage to these influences.
Through experimentation and a passion for vibrant, bold expressions, I like to create art that is accessible to all.
Which other artists inspire you and why?
My greatest inspiration comes from local Bendigo artists who are constantly creating and pushing boundaries in their respective art forms. Witnessing their passion and dedication fuels my own creative drive.
Among the artists who inspire me, Rachel Bourke stands out with her mesmerising glass sculptures that effortlessly blend elegance and intricacy. The way she manipulates glass to create captivating forms is truly awe-inspiring. Another artist who inspires me is Mr. Dimples, whose street art brings love and positivity to public spaces, reminding us of the transformative power of art. Alanah Brand’s
ability to capture the essence of individuals through her realistic portraits is remarkable, and her success in prestigious art competitions like the Archibald Prize serves as a testament to her exceptional talent.
Each of these artists inspires me in their unique way, pushing me to explore new possibilities and deepen my own artistic practice.
How can people check out your work?
You can explore my accessible public artworks in Lyttleton Terrace, Heathcote Footpaths, Back Creek Trail, and Rochester Secondary College. I’ve been fortunate to have had the chance to contribute to these spaces, and I have three very exciting public art projects lined up in the next two months in Bendigo.
If you’d like to keep up with my latest creations and upcoming exhibitions, I invite you to follow me on Instagram and Facebook @aliciahuddyart or head to aliciahuddyart.com.
What would you say to young regional aspiring artists who are thinking of having a go at the artistic life?
I encourage everyone to get creative. Age should not limit your pursuit of a creative life. Young or old, the most important factor is the desire and passion to create.
Don’t worry about conforming to certain standards or expectations. Enjoy exploring your unique artistic voice and expressing yourself authentically. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and stay curious.
Creativity knows no boundaries, and the regional setting can offer its own distinct opportunities and perspectives. Embrace the journey and let your creativity flourish.
