What initially motivated you to become an artist/designer?

I think it was just the way I was made. For as long as I can remember I loved illustrating and making things. My mind never stopped creating little patterns, creatures and cute things. I don’t think my sub-conscience gave me another choice, it’s just the way my brain works. Opening a shop though, that was never in the plan, but here I am 18 years on still creating in bob boutique.

How would you describe your style?

My style comes from my imagination and interpretation of animals, characters and creatures drawn in a cute way.

Drawing and creating just came naturally to me through my sketching.

My art and style has been developed and revisited from old drawings of mine I kept too.

Due to surgery outcomes causing restriction in my drawing hand, I have had to adapt over time to using digital technology to enhance my hand drawn sketches.

Which other artists/designers inspire you?

I am inspired by amazing local artists like Dylan Fowler and Rhiannon Mowat that I collaborate with on the bob hub range at bob boutique. I love seeing what they create and their passion behind it.

Most of my art inspiration comes from art in comedy like The Mighty Boosh, musicians like David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Beatles and Prince.

I also love 60s photos, fashion and home decor, with a great element of design, bright colours and a sense of fun, which feature a lot when I create.

What are some highlights you have from your career so far?

Through all the challenges I am most happy when I can create a range that people love. I am so proud to curate bob hub where local designers and local businesses collaborate in the Bendigo community. To see a beautiful design roll off the printer and be sewn up in our studio makes me really proud that we live surrounded by so many talented people. I am humbled to have won both the Kathryn MacKenzie Award for Outstanding Contribution to Bendigo Tourism and a Regional Hero award.

How can people check out your work? More importantly, how can they purchase it?

You can visit us in our shop bob boutique at 15-17 Williamson Street, Bendigo, under the veranda of the historic Hotel Shamrock building. Come and view my work as well as many local designers in store. The shop is 95 per cent made in Bendigo by us. We make everything!!

You can also purchase online at bob.net.au.

What would you say to young regional aspiring artists/designers who are thinking of making a go of the creative life?

If you live in a regional town, don’t see that as a disadvantage. There are many networks of supportive people to meet at community run art spaces, competitions, pop-up or event spaces. Check with your local council or tourism organisation for opportunities that might suit your work.

Make sure your art is true to you and that your ideas are your own. It is good to start with group shows so you don’t have to carry all the burden of putting on an exhibition yourself. Always be organised and present your work professionally. No matter what, creating in some form is great for the soul.
