CHILDREN’s band The Beanies are in town next week to put on their show The Beanies EGG-Straordinary Day!

Made up of performers Laura, Mim and Michael, the show sees the team babysitting an egg, and nothing goes smoothly.

But it’s not all fun and games, and Laura Howard said the performance is also about getting an important message across to young fans.

“The Beanies are given an egg to take care of for an hour, which sounds very doable, but of course, they muck it up,” she said.

“We are secretly trying to impart a message to the children to be more appreciative of their parents or their caregivers because we know they have a very hard job.

“We hope the kids go away having laughed a lot, sang and danced all show, but also having taken in a bit of a message that they need to be grateful for the big people that take care of them.”

Appreciating your carers isn’t the only message The Beanies are bringing.

“Our mission is to be every child’s best friend and to encourage them to play as themselves and also for themselves so really homing in on authenticity and inclusion,” she said.

“We also make a point to say ‘mini-beanies’ not ‘boys and girls’ and we always say ‘big people’ rather than ‘mum and dad’ in case that’s not their family structure.”

It’s been a whirlwind journey for The Beanies from stage performers to children’s musical stars.

“About seven years ago we came together and started writing some songs and they kind of took off so here we are living the dream,” she said.

“We initially had a podcast that was very successful that we still have now. I think that first week had 50,000 downloads and we started to think we might be onto something here.

“Since then we have kept making the podcast, produced music that has been streamed nearly 7 million times, have had a couple of Aria nominations and get to go on tours, we love it.”
