MITCHELL Street in Axedale will remain closed for up to eight weeks while reconstruction works are completed under the City of Greater Bendigo’s capital works program.

City works manager Brett Martini said the project will include installation of new stormwater drainage pipes, construction of new kerb and channel, traffic island alterations, road pavement renewal and footpath upgrades.

“Traffic management measures will be in place during construction,” he said.

“Roads may be closed and traffic diverted while works are underway (and) pedestrian traffic will be redirected during concrete footpath construction.”

Mr Martini said considerable planning had gone into the project to ensure traffic continues to operate safely and make sure any inconvenience is kept to a minimum.

“All reasonable steps will be taken to limit disruptions as much as possible, and access to properties for residents will be maintained throughout the (reconstruction),” he said.

“The City asks motorists and pedestrians to observe all signage and detours around the works area and apologises for any inconvenience the works may cause.”

The City’s 2025-26 budget allocated $70 million for its capital works program, focusing on maintaining and upgrading community assets, including $2.8 million for new footpaths and trails.

Key projects include similar other infrastructure improvements, the $4.3 million Heathcote Civic Precinct development, the North Bendigo Recreation Reserve (Shadforth Park) pavilion construction, and upgrades to the Bendigo bowls and croquet clubs.
