DEAR Editor,

For anyone concerned about how regional areas will fare as Australia transforms to a net zero electricity system, at first glance nuclear power may seem like a pretty attractive aspiration. But it’s not.

The reality of nuclear power is that to generate enough nuclear power to replace coal generation at the proposed sites means bigger water licenses, which means taking water allocations away from existing farming operations.

David Littleproud and the Nationals’ love for nuclear power is a slap in the face for Aussie farmers, many of whom are already in the midst of another devastating drought.

Our farmers and producers are already experiencing tough drought and dry conditions, and it is expected to only worsen in years to come. Australia is the driest continent on the planet.

Australia needs practical water and energy polices while we rebuild the fairer, modern and reliable power grid that fairly delivers benefits to host communities and makes sure we all have access to cheaper energy.

It’s time the Nationals dropped their bonkers nuclear scheme and the disastrous impact it will have on Australia’s water needs and energy future.
