National recognition for hairdressing identity

HAIRDRESSER and Bendigo TAFE teacher Lauren McIlrath has been recognised for her work in the industry, named an Australian Hair Industry Awards finalist.

Ms McIlrath was nominated for Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year.

“I was so shocked,” she said. “I didn’t think they were for real.

“I was up against some really serious competition with great talent and big budgets.

“Being recognised among my professional colleagues is very important for me.”

Ms McIlrath has worked in the hairdressing industry for more than 28 years and runs her own business, LM Hair Creative.

She was named Bendigo TAFE’s 2024 Teacher of the Year.

“I started my hairdressing and barbering career when I was around 16, and I went headfirst into my training and career,” Ms McIlrath said.

“I have always been passionate and I’ve made sacrifices and compromises to continue doing what I love. I still love it today as much as I ever did.”

 

For those considering a career in hairdressing, Ms McIlrath has some simple advice.

“Have a crack,” she said. “If it’s something you want to get into and you’re passionate about it, then reach out, build your experience and grow your network.

“Give everything a try; you never know what doors might open when you put yourself out there.”

Bendigo TAFE acting chief executive officer Michelle Johnston said Ms McIlrath had made a “remarkable” contribution to the local industry and the TAFE institution.

“Her enthusiasm and dedication to her craft is exceptional and it has a positive impact on her students and their training outcomes,” Ms Johnston said.

“Trailblazers like Lauren are exactly what we need to guide and develop the skills of the future workforce.”

Award winners were announced at a gala event in Sydney on July 1, and Danny Prato took home Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year.
