WORK has started on the new town square at Strathfieldsaye on the corner of Apsley Lane and Wellesley Street.

The $1.5 million project is a key part of the Strathfieldsaye Urban Development Framework, which was prepared with community consultation and adopted by City of Greater Bendigo councillors in 2017.

It’s designed to be a commercial hub where residents can shop, gather, meet and attend events.

“The project also includes construction of shared paths, public space infrastructure and landscaping within the currently unmade grassy and treed road reserve of Wellesley Street located between Apsley Street and Strathfieldsaye Road,” city presentation and assets director Brian Westley said.

“The new public space will feature a range of amenities and facilities to enhance the quality of life and sense of place for both residents and visitors to Strathfieldsaye.

“It will also encourage future development of active retail and commercial spaces at ground level and apartment living on upper levels.”

Mr Westley said the town square would have links to other public facilities that showcased Strathfieldsaye’s identity, provide a gathering place for the community, adn stimulate private investment and land redevelopment.

Flexible paved gathering spaces for markets and cultural events, a shared path for walking, running and cycling, and a raised garden area with shade and seating are among the features.

A hardscape commercial breakout area aims to allow businesses to extend their services and products into the public space, and perimeter footpaths will service future commercial frontages and provide opportunities for slower-moving pedestrians while connecting the site to surrounding streets.

Open green spaces and native garden beds are also part of the plans.

The design was prepared in partnership with Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners, and construction work is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
