KANGAROO Flat Station has a new platform shelter installed by the State Government as part of recent maintenance works on the Bendigo train line.

Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, said she’s glad to see the new shelter installed.

“This new platform shelter is a welcome addition to Kangaroo Flat Station, capturing its history while benefiting passengers,” she said.

“It’s great to see this new shelter now open for the Kangaroo Flat community to enjoy.”

The State Government worked with V/Line and Heritage Victoria to build a replica of the original wooden structure on the station platform.

In 2019 a fire destroyed the first shelter built in 1888, and a another fire damaged the station building in 1990, which was subsequently refurbished in 2008.

The shelter pays tribute to the history of Kangaroo Flat Station, with a plaque describing key events in local history, such as the first passenger trains to stop there in 1874.

The station was opened in 1862 and was commonly known as just ‘Kangaroo’ between 1904 and 1916, before formally becoming ‘Kangaroo Flat’.
