BENDIGO Health has announced the creation of its first-ever chair of clinical research role, a position that will be funded by Agnico Eagle Mines, the operator of Fosterville Gold Mine.

The new chair will be recruited to drive high-quality, evidence-based clinical research at the hospital with the recruitment process beginning soon.

Bendigo Health board deputy chair Professor Carol McKinstry said the role is a “transformative investment” in the region’s future health.

“[It] will expand research in our region and, most importantly, lead to better outcomes for patients,” she said.

“By bringing together doctors, researchers and academic partners, the initiative will improve healthcare right here in the region, meaning patients can access innovative treatments closer to home.”

The chair of clinical research is expected to accelerate Bendigo Health’s capability to deliver local clinical trials, giving patients new opportunities to access cutting-edge therapies without needing to travel to metropolitan centres.

By embedding clinician-researchers within Bendigo Health, the role’s purpose will be to support a stronger, highly skilled workforce that integrates research with frontline care, benefiting patients now and into the future.

Executive director of medical services, Dr Seema Bagia, said the position will be central to Bendigo Health’s long-term research strategy.

“Patients in the Loddon Mallee will benefit directly,” she said.

“More research means new treatments, improved care, and a stronger focus on complex diseases, all delivered closer to home.”

Agnico Eagle’s vice president of Australia operations Ion Hann said the mining company is proud to back healthcare research.

“[It] makes a real difference,” he said.
