BENDIGO Community Health Services has joined forces with Healthy Loddon Campaspe to make walking easier for seniors in White Hills through formation of a new group.

The White Hills Wanderers walking group is meeting on Mondays at 9.30am until June 24.

Bendigo Community Health Services health promotion officer Moni Sonsuwan said anyone aged 60 or older who wanted to get back into walking was welcome to join.

“Walking groups offer more than just physical benefits, they serve as a vital connection to social interaction and mental wellbeing,” Ms Sonsuwan said. “In a time where loneliness and isolation can greatly impact seniors’ health, the significance of walking groups cannot be emphasised enough.”

Ms Sonsuwan said formal walking groups created a structured yet adaptable opportunity for people to interact with others, share stories and encourage one another on the path to improved health.

“The combination of walking, a gentle form of exercise suitable for many, and the companionship within the group, forms a powerful antidote to the sedentary lifestyle often associated with aging,” she said.

“White Hills Wanderers meets at the entrance of Garden for the Future, Bosquet Street, and together we enjoy a social walk around the botanic gardens.

“Members are also welcome to bring their friends, family members or pets.”

Walkers will receive a free Bendigo Community Health Services drink bottle and pedometer when they join.
