BENDIGO Health’s Move for Mental Health virtual fitness challenge has officially begun and will run for the month of October.

Raising $70,000 is the goal for improving the wellbeing and recovery outcomes of mental health patients in the region.

At a recent recruitment drive to launch the fundraiser, Bendigo Health’s acting director fundraising and foundation Carlie Ryan encouraged everyone to sign

up, be that a workplace, an individual or a family.

Those interested can register online, set their fitness and fundraising goals and share their progress to encourage support and donations from others.

“Move any way you like, whether that’s run, walk, (or) dance, just to commit to make some movement and support mental health programs across our region,” Ms Ryan said.

“The money will go to exercise and wellness programs for patients. It’s really tailored to the consumer, so it might be participating in gym programs or swimming programs, or simply going for a group walk and grabbing a coffee at the end of that and connecting with that

group.

“For consumers that are out in the community, having that connection is really important. Programs like these aren’t funded through traditional health services, so it’s really important that we raise funds to offer something that can make a huge impact.”

Program participant Austin Shrubshall said the initiative has introduced him to a fresh group of people, where he’s felt included, valued and able to get more out of life.

“It’s about helping each other where we need it most and being a pillar for each other in overcoming our personal problems,” he said.

Register for the challenge or pledge a donation via the Bendigo Health Foundation website.
