A LOCAL sailing school that gives people with a disability the chance to learn to sail in a fun and inclusive environment is embarking on its spring-summer season.

Sailability sessions run on the first Wednesday of every month until March.

Based on the placid waters of Lake Weeroona, Sailability Bendigo is one of 350 chapters worldwide and is a partnership between the Bendigo Yacht Club, Cairn Curran Sailing Club and community sports organisation Sports Focus.

Sports Focus project coordinator – program delivery and digital communications, Sophie Bickford, said the volunteer-led school, which has been going for over 15 years, is a secure and welcoming setting that allows all abilities the occasion to sail.

“A lot of participants otherwise wouldn’t leave their wheelchair and wouldn’t have the opportunity to ever (take part) in such an affordable and safe environment,” she said.

“We have so many precautions about the water level, the weather, the weeds and algae as well.”

Ms Bickford said volunteers are crucial to the program, and anyone who might be interested in helping is encouraged to get in touch.

“I’m sure there are a lot more people that would love to come and be involved, especially people that are retired and have sailing experience and would love to make a difference,” she said.

“They (also) don’t need to be an experienced sailor because there’s other things that they can help with.”

Prospective participants and volunteers can contact Ms Bickford via [email protected] or by calling 5442 3101.
