VOLUNTEERS at Kangaroo Flat Community House have been working hard over the last six months to get the space up and running.

The core group of about 15 helpers celebrated their endeavour with a barbecue lunch last week.

Centre manager Tracey Moss said since Christmas last year the community house has been growing.

“We started building our volunteer program about six months ago,” she said. “Our volunteers come in and help us with administration, facilitating some of our art classes, our barbecue.

“We’ve been building up a pool of volunteers to help start our food relief program in a fortnight.

“We’ll bring in fresh fruit and vegetables, and we’ve got warm coats, doonas, blankets and we’re just getting a hold of some other resources to help people with.”

Ms Moss also helps run the Eaglehawk Community House and said she is always looking at ways the two locations can work together.

“We’re looking at establishing our community garden, and some of the produce will go over to feed the commercial kitchen in Eaglehawk,” Ms Moss said.

“In turn, we can bring some of that food over here and hand it out. It’s a wonderful partnership, so many opportunities that have popped up in the last six months we’re just grabbing on to.”

Ms Moss said the Kangaroo Flat Community House is looking for an extra person in administration to offer six hours a week, so activities such as meditation, tai chi and a carers respite program can run on four days instead of three.

“We’re just so busy in those three days that we need to be working towards opening four and potentially next year opening five days a week,” Ms Moss said.
