A COMMEMORATIVE service honouring local men from the 2/29th Australian Infantry Battalion and other battalions will be held on Sunday 5 October.

The service will commence at 11am at the Sandakan Memorial, 214 McIvor Highway, Strathdale.

“The 2/29th Australian Infantry Battalion was formed in Victorian 1940 and served in Singapore and Malaya in WW2,” said president of the 2/29th Battalion Association, Andrew Coffey.

“The men all became Prisoners of War of the Japanese from February 1942 until August 1945 and worked on the Thai-Burma Railway.

“Our association was formed when they returned with men from all over Victoria and many coming from Bendigo and the surrounding areas.”

The original members have all passed but the association has been continued by relatives and friends of the servicemen.

Men of the 2/29th Battalion all became prisoners of War and worked on the Thai-Burma Railway.

“We will hold a small but poignant service,” said Mr Coffey. “The names of the men will be read out and members of the 309 Army Cadet Unit will act as flag bearers.

“There will also be a local bugler and a Bendigo Women’s choir will perform a tribute.

“After the service we will adjourn to the Bendigo RSL for refreshments.

“We’ve had a good response from interested people.

“Everyone is welcome to attend the service and if you are a descendant of one of the men we would like to hear from you.”
